Arroyo widens lead over Poe in election: poll (2:58 p.m.)

MANILA -- Incumbent Gloria Arroyo has stretched her lead over opposition candidate Fernando Poe five days before the country votes in presidential elections, a new opinion poll said on Wednesday.

The poll by independent research firm Pulse Asia predicted Arroyo would win 37 percent of the vote compared to 31 percent for Poe, the country's most famous film star.

The poll gave breakaway opposition candidate and former police chief Panfilo Lacson 11 percent, reformer Raul Roco seven percent and television evangelist Eddie Villanueva five percent.

The survey, conducted from April 26 to 29, polled 1,800 respondents and had a margin of error of 2.4 percent. It said around eight percent of voters were undecided or had no preference.

The poll showed a significant improvement for Arroyo over the last Pulse Asia survey around a month earlier, which gave Arroyo 34 percent and Poe 31 percent. (AFP)
