Security forces seize large load of bomb chemical (5:16 p.m.)

MANILA--Security forces have seized a massive haul of agricultural chemicals often used in bomb making, military officials said Wednesday.

The 250 kilos of ammonium nitrate were being transported by bus to the northern city of Laoag when combined forces from the navy, police and army intercepted it on Monday, Navy spokesman Captain Geronimo Malabanan said.

The bus driver has been detained by authorities after failing to produce proper permits for transporting the chemicals, Malabanan said.

Ammonium nitrate is used as a component in fertilizer, although terrorist groups have been known to use it in the past to make bombs.

Security forces remain on high alert across the country to head off possible terrorist attacks ahead of the May 10 national elections.

Officials in Manila have said that several members of a terrorist cell were believed on the loose in the capital and could carry out bombings. (AFP)
