Candidate tries to bomb own rally for sympathy vote (3:12 p.m.)

MANILA -- Police said Friday they foiled a plot by a member of parliament to bomb his own election rally in an attempt to win sympathy votes.

The brother of Cong. Edgar Erice was arrested while driving a van carrying a home-made bomb to a campaign rally in Manila, police superintendent Marcelino Franco said.

He said police believe Erice's supporters planned to stage a bomb attack to attract a sympathy vote for the congressman, who is standing for mayor in Caloocan City north of the capital.

Police said a man caught planting the bomb confessed that he was ordered to do so by the congressman's head of security.

At least 86 people have been killed in election-related violence in the lead-up to Monday's presidential, parliamentary and local elections. Most of the violence has been blamed on personal political squabbles. AFP
