12 Vietnamese fishers arrested for poaching (5:14 p.m.)

MANILA -- The Philippine Navy arrested 12 Vietnamese fishermen for poaching and illegal entry after they were caught at sea in Mindanao without permits, an official said Sunday.

A navy gunboat on patrol intercepted the Vietnamese-registered boat Saturday as it was catching fish off the Taganak islands, near the border of the Malaysian state of Sabah, Capt. Feliciano Angue said.

The boat was towed to a coastguard station in the Tawi-Tawi islands where cases of illegal poaching and illegal entry were being prepared, Angue said. AFP
