Cop shot dead; 3 kids wounded

CEBU CITY -- A policeman attending a barrio fiesta was shot dead in Dumanjug, Cebu while three children were wounded when two men armed with M16 rifles opened fire at a house in Compostela last Saturday.

PO2 Agapito Aranas, 35, was declared dead on arrival at the Barili District Hospital after sustaining five gunshot wounds on his body at 5:30 p.m.

Also in Dumanjug, in Barangay Cogon Saturday night, a policeman shot a man who ran amok and attempted to hack barangay tanods and officials who tried to stop him.

In Barangay Sirao, Cebu City Sunday morning, a man was hacked to death by his own cousin who got mad after him for barging inside his house and scared his wife.

PO2 Aranas was assigned in the Moalboal Police Station but was in Barangay Kabalaasnan, Dumanjug for a fiesta celebration after buying a parcel of land there.

He identified himself as policeman in trying to pacify a commotion.

Dumanjug Police chief investigator PO3 Felipe Vibar said that as Aranas was heading home, two unidentified men shot him.

Vibar believes the men were the ones who figured in the commotion earlier.

They also believe that his service .38 revolver was stolen after it couldn't be found.

Two men were summoned for questioning after they were seen in the area minutes before the shooting. Their identities are being withheld pending further investigation.

They denied involvement in the shooting. Police required that they be subjected to the paraffin test.

In Compostela, two motorcycle riding men went on a "shooting rampage" in Barangay Camanucan and fired at the house of Rene Ronquillo Yray at 11:15 p.m. Saturday.

Injured were his daughter Lucille Catherine, 13, and the neighbor's children Mary Angelique Valencia, 13, and Sheede Shene Valencia, 11.

Initial reports said two men were seen wearing cloth masks onboard a motorcycle heading south after strafing Yray's house.

SPO1 Ramon Perales discovered 18 slugs of an M16 rifle scattered at the crime scene.

The three girls were brought to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center where they were declared out of danger.

Police are still investigating the incident.

At 7:15 p.m. last Saturday, PO3 Saul Alejandria had to shoot Mateo Lamosao after he threatened to attack residents of Barangay Cogon, Dumanjug.

He sustained a gunshot wound on his right thigh.

In Sitio Langub, Barangay Sirao, Cebu City, Danilo Bontilao, 40, sustained multiple hack wounds after his first cousin Jovelito attacked him with a bolo.

Jovelito was attending a fiesta when Danilo reportedly went to Jovelito's house. Jovelito's wife shouted. Jovelito was reportedly mad because Danilo reportedly did this three times before.

Armed with a bolo, he went to Danilo's house at 7 a.m. Sunday and hacked Danilo.

He then fled with his brother Elvin. MEA
