BAGUIO CITY -- Some big supermarkets in Baguio City reportedly started to recall stocks of Gerber baby food products in the past days following reports that some of them were tampered and may possibly pose health risks to consumers.

The managements of Sunshine Supermart, Benguet Supermart and U-Need Grocery facilitated Thursday the recall of Gerber products, particularly those contained in jars and juices bottles.

No less than the maker of Gerber products ordered a recall of baby food in jars and juice bottles in the country following their receipt of information on the alleged tampering of their products.

Gerber warned Filipino consumers not to patronize its jars and juice products and even promised to refund unconsumed products.

The company, however, assured that their Baby Cereals and Gerber for Mom products were not tampered.

The recall of the products in Baguio, according to some store managers, was also witnessed by a marketing agent distributing Gerber products. Gerber products are manufactured by Switzerland-based Novartis.

Sun.Star tried but failed to reach Armando Galimba, director of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) regional office in the Cordillera, about the recall of Gerber products in the region.

A source, however, said most supermarkets are voluntarily recalling the products.

In Manila, Trade Undersecretary Adrian Cristobal Jr. said the DTI is coordinating with the Bureau of Food and Drugs (Bfad) for the recall of Gerber products.

It was not immediately ascertained if big supermarkets in La Trinidad, Benguet, also started to recall Gerber products, especially since the public is not yet aware of the dangers that tampered Gerber jars and juices pose.

The Department of Health (DOH) has yet to release a list of possible diseases awaiting those who have already consumed tampered Gerber products.
