Judge shot, hurt by ex-judge

DAGUPAN CITY -- A Municipal Trial Court judge was wounded when he was shot by a retired Regional Trial Court judge following a heated altercation in Barangay Tapuac, Dagupan City Tuesday morning.

Supt. Noli G. Taliņo, city police chief, said they are investigating the incident further to find out the motive behind the shooting of Gabat of the MTCC branch 3 in Dagupan allegedly by former Lingayen RTC executive judge Salvador Vedaņa.

Gabat, 50, of Calasiao, suffered one gunshot wound in the back and another in the left hand. He is now out of danger at the Luzon Medical Center.

The lone suspect, retired RTC judge Salvador Vedaņa, 63, of Urbiztondo town, was arrested when the police intercepted his car.

Initial police investigation disclosed that Gabat was on his way to Dagupan City for a promulgation of a case. On the other hand, Vedaņa, who was allegedly tailing the victim, tried to stop Gabat so Vedaņa overtook Gabat's car and blocked his path.

The suspect got off and approached the victim's car after which an altercation allegedly ensued between them.

At that instance, Vedaņa drew his firearm and fired at Gabat, hitting him in the left hand and back. A woman passenger of Gabat went out of his car and boarded Vedaņa's vehicle. They sped towards Calasiao town.

Policemen chased Vedaņa until they reached the junction of Judge de Venecia Highway where they overtook the suspect's car. Taliņo said the former judge did not resist arrest.

Sun.Star gathered at the police station that the woman is Vedaņa's sister, Milagros Vedaņa-Cuison.

The former judge had been detained at the city police station's detention cell.
