Malacaņang accepts Soliman's resignation (3:20 p.m.)

MANILA -- President Arroyo accepted Tuesday the resignation of Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman, Presidential Spokesman Ignacio Bunye said.

"The President expresses utmost regret in accepting the resignation of Secretary Dinky Soliman," Bunye said in a statement.

Bunye said Soliman is a gracious and selfless professional who stepped down in timely fashion to serve a higher objective. " The President and the people are grateful for her service. She served the poor and fought for the poor," Bunye said.

Soliman was earlier reported to have tendered his resignation to give way to Vice President Noli de Castro.

De Castro's spokesman, Jesse Andres, said the vice president would accept any position the President would give him.

Soliman was reportedly offered to head the Social Security System, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office or the National Anti-Poverty Commission. Sunnex
