ZAMBOANGA -- Three of the five persons who were killed when their wooden homes were buried in a landslide in the town of Pualas in Lanao del Sur were recovered Thursday.

Rescuers retrieved from the rubble the remains of a certain Lina Pasiugan and her two siblings. Two others were still reported missing.

The five had been sleeping when the landslide came crashing down in the town of Pualas on Tuesday, civil defense authorities said. They did not say what caused the landslide but previous ones in the area have been caused by heavy rain.

The landslide blocked a portion of a major highway to Pualas, which was still impassable by Thursday, they said.

The commanding officer of the Marine Battalion Landing Team 8 (MBLT8) and his troops visited the area to provide assistance to residents.

Affected by the landslide were the barangays of Purug and Linuk in Pualas or an area of some two kilometers.

The Provincial Engineering Office in Lanao del Sur was still doing clearing operations in the area as of Friday.

Another landslide also reportedly occurred in the town of Madamba. There were no reports of damages or injuries so far there. (With AFP)
