Journalist wounded in ambush (3:20 pm)

MANILA -- A radio broadcaster was shot and wounded in an ambush in the southern Philippines early Friday, in the fifth attack against a journalist in two weeks, police said.

Radio Mindanao Network broadcaster Eduardo Valida was shot at as he rode to work on his motorcycle in the town of Malaybalay at dawn. His left arm was shattered by a bullet, a police report said.

Four radio broadcasters have been killed in the Philippines since July 31, and six have been gunned down so far this year.

Police are investigating whether the killings were all work-related and said they would ease restrictions on gun permits for journalists.

Forty-five Filipino journalists have been killed since democracy was restored in the Philippines after the fall of dictator Ferndinand Marcos in 1986.

The Philippines is considered as among the most dangerous places in the world for the working press, according to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists.AFP
