RP to build 45-million-dollar police fingerprint database (4:05 pm)

MANILA -- The Philippines is to build a 2.5 billion-peso (45 million-dollar) computerized fingerprint database to help police track criminals and terrorists, the economic planning department said Friday.

The project would convert the 800,000 criminal fingerprints and 400 latent prints held by the National Bureau of Investigation into electronic format, said Daniel Pabellon, director of the department's information and technology office.

"The system will enhance the capability of the NBI in solving and deterring crimes by converting the paper-based criminal and civilian fingerprint records into a computerized database," Pabellon said.

The database will be capable of storing 30 million sets of fingerprints.

"We expect the project to be operational after nine months from the start of the installation and testing of the hardware and software at the NBI headquarters," said Jonathan Uy of the department's public investment division. AFP
