Two arrested for kidnap-killing of Coca-Cola executive (2:45 pm)

MANILA -- Philippine police said Monday they have detained two more suspects over the kidnap and murder of a Coca-Cola executive that outraged the Southeast Asian nation.

Fidel Superable and Jose Artoza were arrested in raids late last month, police said.

The arrests bring to 14 the total number of suspects detained for the November 23 abduction and killing of Betti Chua Sy, a Chinese-Filipino marketing executive for The Coca-Cola Co., a police statement said.

Seven gang members remain at large.

Sy bled to death from a gunshot wound while in captivity and her corpse was found stuffed inside a garbage bag dumped by the side of a Manila road.

Her kidnapping was just one of a string of abductions targetting affluent members of the ethnic Chinese community in Manila that led President Arroyo to lift a four-year moratorium on the death penalty.

Arroyo has since insisted her government has managed to reduce the number of kidnappings, even though so far no new executions have been carried out. AFP
