Dad leaps from overpass with son; kid dies By Jonathan F. Fernandez
MANILA -- An alleged drug-dependent father took hostage his one-year-old son, climbed on a pedestrian overpass along Commonwealth Ave. in Quezon City and jumped off the structure an hour after on Friday afternoon.
The child died in the fall while his father survived.
Nestor Collantes Jr., of Kalapati Street, Barangay Holy Spirit, Quezon City, died while undergoing treatment at the Fairview General Hospital in Quezon City from head and body injuries.
Collantes's father, Nestor Sr., 33, survived and is confined at the East Avenue Medical Center. Nestor Sr. sustained several contusions on the head and body after residents, irked by what he did, mauled him.
Central Police District (CPD) acting director Oscar Marinas said Nestor Sr. climbed atop the railing of the overpass at 1:50 p.m. with Nestor Jr. cradled in his arms.
Nestor Sr. then shouted and threatened to jump off the overpass. Several passersby tried to convince him to go down but to no avail.
He held hostage the boy for almost an hour as police and rescue teams prepared a net to cushion Nestor Sr. and his son if they fell.
Nestor Sr. leapt off the overpass with his son in his arms at 2:50 p.m. and the net caught them.
But he fell on Nestor Jr., who sustained head and body injuries.
Rescuers quickly rushed the boy to the Fairview General Hospital where he died later.
Irked residents ganged up on Nestor Sr. but were pacified by police authorities.
During investigation, the wife of Nestor Sr. admitted that her husband is a drug dependent. |
