4 of 12 jails in R-11 congested: jail exec
By Aurea A. Gerundio

DAVAO CITY -- The health of the inmates in some jails in Region 11 is still at great risk due to congestion.

This was according to Sr. Supt Ruben Bonavente, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) 11 assistant director.

During Saturday's Kapihan sa PIA, Bonavente said the actual population in four of 12 jails exceed the ideal jail population.

He identified them as those in the cities of Davao, Digos, Tagum, and Panabo.

At the Davao City jail in Ma-a, Bonavente said the actual population of inmates is pegged at 840 while the ideal population based on the total floor area is 450,

The Digos City jail, meanwhile, is in excess of 80 inmates.

It has total number of 150 inmates while the ideal population is 70.

Tagum City jail has 290 inmates while the ideal population is 180 while there are 53 inmates at the Panabo City jail that has an ideal population of 35.

Due to congested detention cells, Bonavente said the spread of viral infections such as boils, sore eyes, measles, flu and colds is prevalent.

"We distribute medicines to all jails but the monthly purchase of medicines is not sufficient. Not all jails also have separate infirmary to isolate inmates with diseases," Bonavente said.

He said BJMP 11 also receives donations but these go to the construction of jail buildings.
