3 Indonesian women nabbed for drugs

MANILA -- Three Indonesian nationals were arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Parañaque City Sunday evening allegedly for drugs smuggling.

Police said they confiscated from the three Indonesian women's possession 10 kilos of the illegal drug methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu), whose value was estimated at P20 million.

Arrested were Herawaty Ng, Maimun Wagimin and Khoe Hong Gek, all holders of Indonesian passports.

Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) executive director Anselmo Avenido Jr. said the three arrived at the airport around 7:35 p.m. from Hong Kong via a Philippine Airlines flight.

The suspects' baggage were subjected to routine X-ray machine inspection at the customs scanning unit operated by a certain Nelson Edano who noticed an unusual object displayed by the X-ray monitor.

Edano immediately alerted the customs personnel at the arrival area who subsequently conducted inspection of the baggage consisting of three trolley bags.

Further inspection showed that each trolley bag contained eight self-sealing plastic bags containing shabu. Field-testing conducted by the Airport Interdiction Team of the PDEA-Metro Manila Regional Office confirmed that the substance was indeed shabu.

The three Indonesians were turned over to the PDEA. They were charged with drugs smuggling, which is punishable by death.

Authorities are now investigating the case of the suspects, as reports reaching the PDEA office disclosed they might have been promised protection by some politicians, police and military officials. (JFF)
