Film stars strip outside church in novel protest (4:55 p.m.)

MANILA -- Eight soft-porn actresses paraded near-naked outside a Roman Catholic church in central Manila on Thursday in a novel protest against film censorship.

The eight young women jumped on to the ledge of a fountain outside Malate Church clad only in skimpy underwear and transparent raincoats, causing a massive traffic jam as people gathered under the rain to gawk and cheer them.

When police arrived to arrest them, the women stripped off their raincoats and brassieres, crossed the street and peacefully surrendered their undergarments to the flustered officers.

The women, with screen names like Kat de Santos and Kuhdet Honasan, had appeared in a series of low-budget soft porn movies produced locally.

They said they were protesting a decision by SM Prime Holdings, the country's biggest shopping mall operator, to stop showing adult films in its cinemas.

Police said the women could face charges of indecent exposure and public scandal. (AFP)
