Bunye welcomes tax measure passage (5:30 p.m.)

MANILA -- Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye welcomed reports that the House of Representatives would definitely pass this year at least two of the eight tax measures that the government has been pushing to avert a possible fiscal crisis.

"On the part of the House, they are confident on passing, on their level, four (tax) measures. They are sure on passing two of these measures. Two out of eight will be a good start," Bunye said.

These two tax measures would likely be the indexation on the specific taxes on cigarettes, beer and alcohol products, or the so-called "sin taxes" and the proposed tax amnesty law.

The House of Representatives has scheduled floor deliberations on the two tax proposals next week.
