Councilor's nephew 'shoots dead' 15-year-old boy By Joy G. Romares
DAVAO CITY -- A 15-year-old boy, who was eating balut with friends, was shot dead by a nephew of a Davao City councilor along Quezon Boulevard shortly before dawn Friday.
Amin Manding, a Barangay 23-C peace and order volunteer, allegedly shot John Rey Corpin, a student and resident of Bucano, for no reason at all.
Amin is a nephew of Council Amilbangsa Manding.
Corpin was eating balut (cooked duck eggs) with friends, identified as Jun, Raymond, Jekjek, Toto, Micmic, Angelica, Sweet and Cherry, at around 2:30 a.m. at Zone 4, Mini-Forest, Davao City shortly before the shooting happened.
The group was hanging around an alley beside the Gagmayng Kistohanong Katilingban (GKK) chapel when Manding with other barangay policemen arrived.
For still unexplained reasons, Manding approached Corpin and pushed him to the ground.
Shocked, it was only Sweet who was able to react. "Ayaw ingon anaa among kauban, Kuy (Don't do that to our friend)," Sweet said.
Instead of heeding Sweet's plea, Manding pulled out a gun and shot Corpin on the back of his head, the right portion of his neck, the right leg, chest, and wrist.
"Nanagan iyang mga kauban tungod sa kahadlok. Nisumbong sila sa Bombo Radyo ug gi-refer pud sila diri sa amoa (His companions ran in fear and went to Bombo Radyo to ask for help. They were then referred to us)," said Sta. Ana Police Precinct investigator Melanio Dilan.
Police went to the crime scene but the barangay policemen were no longer around.
Only three of Corpin's friends sought help and they are now under the custody of the Women and Children's Protection Desk (WCPD), Dilan said.
"Ang ilang mga kauban, nanago na, sila lang ang nagpakita diri (The other companions are now hiding in fear, only the three girls appeared before us)," he said.
Corpin was just visiting friends in the barangay on that fateful night, having even asked permission from his grandfather.
Corpin lives with his grandfather because his mother is abroad. He earned the moniker "Kano" because his father was said to be an American. There was no mention of the whereabouts of the father.
At Mini-forest, Corpin who was at that time eating balut with friends saw Sweet, Angelica, and Cherry who have just attended a birthday party of a friend. They invited the girls to join them. That was when Amin and the other barangay policemen found them.
The remains of the victim were brought to the Patalinghug Funeral Parlor.
