Ramos appears before Senate

MANILA (Updated 5:30 p.m.) -- Former President Fidel Ramos appears before the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee Thursday to shed light on the alleged irregular Smokey Mountain Development and Reclamation Project.

Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago earlier accused Ramos of involvement in the alleged anomalous project wherein the government reportedly lost about P3 billion.

R-II Holdings president Reghis Romero, Dionisio dela Serna; Roberto Aventajado; Roberto Balao;, Edmundo Sese and Vicente Suazo Jr also appeared before the committee..

Dela Serna served as chairperson of the Executive Committee created to oversee the Smokey Mountain housing project. Aventajado, on the other hand, allegedly took over as execom chairperson by 1999.

Balao sat as NHA general manager during the period of negotiation and signed for the government in all three versions of the agreement.

Sese is president of R-II Builders while Suazo is president of Harbor Center Port Terminal.

Romero has declined to appear before the Blue Ribbon Committee, citing his Constitutional rights. (Sunnex Luzon/JPM)
