Abra politicians yield 'private army' firearms By Ernie N. Olson Jr.
CAMP DANGWA, La Trinidad, Benguet -- Abra politicians surrendered some 29 assorted firearms to the Police Regional Office (PRO) Monday.
The politicians promised to yield more guns used by their private armies not later than October 8.
Seven assorted firearms, a grenade launcher and 54 confiscated motor vehicles were also turned over to the newly created Task Force Abra (TFA) from September 25 up to October 4.
PRO-Cordillera director and concurrent TFA commander Chief Supt. Rowland Albano said the turned-over ammos include rifles, machine guns, pistols and some homemade revolvers from Gov. Vicente Valera, Lagayan Mayor Cecilia Luna, La Paz Mayor Ysrael Bernos and Peņarrubia Mayor Antonio Domes-ag among others.
Albano said the turnover was held in the Abra Provincial Police Office at Camp Juan Villamor around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Edgardo Aglipay, during his visit to Abra last month, ordered local politicians to disband their private armies and surrender the firearms in two weeks time.
The directive formed part of the gun ban he imposed province-wide to curb, if not totally stop, heinous crimes perpetrated in the "Killing Field of the North."
Albano said he conducted an inspection and a dialogue with local executives of the province.
An awarding ceremony followed at 8 a.m., wherein 13 Medalya ng Kasanayan and 49 Medalya ng Papuri were conferred to 11 deserving commissioned officers and 51 non-commissioned officers of the Abra Provincial Police Office and TFA.
The activity was followed by the closing ceremony of the PNP Refresher Course Class 01-2004 hurdled by 61 of the 64 original personnel who started the refresher course.
