Cebu lawmaker's smile angers Mandaue mayor

CEBU CITY -- It was just a smile from Rep. Antonio Cuenco but it irked Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano.

Interviewed in his office, Ouano told reporters he didn't like the reaction of Cuenco (Cebu City, south district) when the two of them were guests in a talk show over the ABS-CBN News Channel last Tuesday night.

According to Ouano, Cuenco's smile was "insinuating."

"When the smoke clears, we hope nga ang mocking smile ni Cuenco mahapak namo'g balik niya," said the mayor's son and spokesperson, Thadeo Jovito "Jonkie" Ouano.

The talk show hosted by ABS-CBN anchor Pia Hontiveros featured Cuenco, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency Director Anselmo Avenido Jr. and National Bureau of Investigation 7 Director Reynaldo Esmeralda at the Manila studio of the TV station.

Ouano joined the panel through a live patch from the station's regional broadcasting complex in Mandaue City.

Cuenco just smiled when asked by Hontiveros if he believed Ouano's statements about the shabu laboratories in Barangays Umapad and Paknaan.

These facilities, as well as a storage facility in Looc, were raided last Sept. 24 and 25.

Before the "Strictly Politicis" show ended, Ouano said he didn't like Cuenco's smile.

Asked Wednesday if he wanted to talk to Cuenco to clarify his side, Ouano told reporters there is no need.

"With his insinuation, unsa pa ma'y istoryahan (We don't have anything more to talk about?" the mayor said.

His son Jonkie said the mayor would attend a congressional inquiry on the issue if Cuenco will inhibit himself.

Jonkie said Cuenco is already "biased."

Cuenco, for his part said, the Mandaue City mayor should be made to answer why shabu laboratories were able operate in his turf.

"The burden of proof is now shifted to him, to prove he was not knowledgeable. Although we are not condemning him, but I think he has to answer this charge," Cuenco said on the same TV show. (AAG)
