MANILA -- A crewman drowned and 17 others were rescued after a cargo ship sank in Surigao Friday, civil defense officials said.

Surigao City Mayor Alfonso Casura identified Faljon Dagunday of Bohol as the lone fatality.

A coastguard statement said MV Alta Verde had a shipment of cement bound for Naval, Leyte.

It sank five nautical miles from Surigao port. (AFP/Sunnex)
