Special airport gate for Thailand flights set-up (5:00 p.m.)
MANILA -- The Philippines' main international airport is designating a special airport gate for international flights from Thailand to prevent the entry of bird flu from that country, it was announced Saturday.
The Manila International Airport Authority said in a statement that arrivals on flights from Thailand will be directed to a designated airport gate where a special monitoring team will be assigned.
This will be done "for closer and effective monitoring and to avoid inconvenience to other passengers," the airport authority said in a statement.
An eight-year-old girl died of bird flu in northern Thailand recently, and she is the country's 11th confirmed victim of the virus this year.
There have been no cases of bird flu found in the Philippines but the government has banned the import of poultry and live birds from many Southeast Asian countries as a precautionary measure. (AFP) |
