3 cops nabbed, rapped for frustrated murder

STA. MARIA -- A frustrated murder case was filed Tuesday against three policemen assigned at the PNP headquarters in Camp Crame in Quezon City for allegedly trying to kill a policeman at a barangay in this Pangasinan town.

Charged by the Sta. Maria police were Police Officers 1 Noel Tamayo, Alan Ponce and Joel Claro, all assigned at the computer services in Camp Crame.

They were arrested in Barangay Carmen allegedly while trying to flee after shooting Police Officer 1 Teody Abalos of this town.

Initial investigation revealed Abalos was on his way to the police station at the vicinity of Barangay Pilar when his vehicle was blocked by a Mitsubishi Adventure car.

An occupant of the car, who was sitting near the driver's seat, fired at Abalos but missed.

Abalos immediately informed the police station about the incident and requested for a backup.

Abalos's colleagues and members of the barangay security force responded and helped pursue the gunmen.

The Sta. Maria police also sent a flash alarm to the Rosales Police Office, which put up a blocking force in Barangay Carmen.

The three suspects were arrested there.

The three policemen did not resist arrest. Confiscated from them were a 9mm pistol, caliber .45 pistol and lugger .14.

The three suspects denied firing at Abalos and said they just fired a shot in the air as they were celebrating a birthday.

They said they were invited by their relatives in the town and were on their way back to Camp Crame when the incident happened.

But Municipal Police Chief Bernardin Barberan said even if they fired in the air, this was still considered an offense.

The three suspects are detained at the police station.

The court set the bail for each at P150,000.
