DAVAO CITY -- Murder charges have been filed before the City Prosecutor's Office (CPO) against Edwin Alterado, son of former Davao City councilor Sinforiano Alterado.

Edwin Alterado is accused of shooting Zaldo Silat to death on R. Castillo St. at around 2 a.m. Sunday.

The younger Alterado is the president of the Agriculture Foundation School, an affiliate of Mindanao Aeronautical Technical School (Mats) in Davao del Norte.

The Alterados own the aeronautical school.

Silat was a college sophomore at Mats taking up Bachelor of Science in Marine Technology.

The case was filed Wednesday by the Sta. Ana police led by Chief Insp. Filmore Escobal based on the complaint of Carios Silat Jr., the 33-year-old brother of the victim.

Carios filed the complaint based on the affidavit of three witnesses who saw Edwin shot Zaldo.

Two of the witnesses said they were walking with Zaldo along Villanueva Street in R. Castillo, Agdao near the gate of Mats to buy ice water.

They said they saw a man later identified as Edwin holding a gun prompting them to run.

The suspect chased and shot at them, killing Zaldo in the process.

Alterado's lawyer, Councilor Victorio Advincula, said they will not avail of the 10 days given by the prosecutor's office to answer the charges in the preliminary investigation in order to speed up the resolution of the case.

"We will just do our action based on the investigation of the investigating prosecutor," Advincula said.

Accompanied by his father, Edwin surrendered before the Sta. Ana police to face the accusations against him.

His elder brother Eduardo said Edwin voluntarily surrendered "to show that we are not evading any responsibility."

He said his brother is a good man.
