Typhoon intensifies, to hit Aurora Friday
By Jonathan F. Fernandez

MANILA -- Typhoon Yoyong further strengthened Wednesday as it moved closer to the country, the weather bureau said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, the center of typhoon Yoyong was spotted 610 kilometers east southeast of Virac, Catanduanes with strongest sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour (kph) from 150 kph Tuesday and gustiness of up to 210 kph.

It is moving in a west northwesterly direction at 35 kph.

The center of Yoyong (international codename: Nanmadol) is expected to hit land Friday in the vicinity of Isabela, Aurora and Nueva Vizcaya Friday afternoon or Friday evening.

Because of its wide circumference, Yoyong will cover the entire Luzon island, the country's largest and main island.

Pagasa has placed Catanduanes under Signal Number 3.

Strong winds and heavy rains will be experienced in that province starting Wednesday night until Thursday and possibly even until Friday.

The weather agency has hoisted Signal Number 2 over Sorsogon, Albay, Burias Island, Camarines provinces, Quezon, Pollillo Island, Aurora and Northern Samar.

Placed under signal number 1 were Masbate, Romblon, Marinduque, Rizal, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Pangasinan, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Benguet, La Union, Ifugao, Isabela, Mt. Province, Ilocos provinces, Abra, Kalinga, Cagayan, Apayao, Biliran Island, and Eastern and Western Samar.

Yoyong will be 110 kilometers north northeast of Virac, Catanduanes by Thursday afternoon, 40 kilometers northwest of Baler, Aurora by Friday afternoon and by Saturday afternoon, it will be 290 kilometers west of Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
