POE, 65, PASSES AWAY
MANILA (Updated 2:20 a.m.) -- Doctors at St. Luke's Medical Center confirmed that Fernando Poe Jr., 65, erstwhile Philippine presidential candidate, passed away at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, Philippine time.
Dr. Abdias Aquino, Poe's attending neurologist, said in an announcement to media at the hospital premises that Poe passed away despite measures to revive him after he fell into a coma late Saturday night following a stroke.
"I'm very sad to announce that Mr. FPJ passed away," Dr. Aquino said. He added aggressive resuscitative and therapeutic measures were undertaken, to no avail. A full medical disclosure will be made shortly, he added.
"Ginawa po namin ang lahat (We did everything possible)," Dr. Aquino said.
The family, in a statement coming from Poe's wife, Susan Roces, confirmed the passing away of the man known as the king of Philippine movies. The family thanked those who condoled with them and stayed with them in this difficult time.
The statement said, in his last days, the victims of the recent super typhoon victims were in the mind of Poe. The family then called on prayers for Poe and for the Filipino people in general.
Funeral arrangements are being made by his family.
Poe was placed on life support system at the St. Luke's Medical Center after suffering a stroke late Saturday night.
Poe ran but lost in a bitterly fought presidential election against President Arroyo last May.
Earlier, physicians attending to Poe said the actor suffered the condition called cerebral thrombosis, in which a brain clot blocked an artery.
Prior to his passing away, Poe was visited at the hospital by friends, in and out of show business.
As a result of Poe's deteriorating health, the Presidential Electoral Tribunal early Monday said it may order a deferment of the oral arguments on the election protest filed by Poe against President Arroyo.
The tribunal earlier set the oral argument on the affirmative defenses raised in the electoral protest for 10 a.m. today, Tuesday.
Last July 22, Poe and his vice presidential running mate, former Senator Loren Legarda, asked the tribunal to review the results of the May 10, 2004 elections. (Sunnex)
