15 hurt in stampede at Sto. Domingo Church (11:41 a.m.)
MANILA -- A stampede occurred at the Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon City early Thursday after fans of the late movie icon Fernando Poe Jr. attempted to open two gates of the church in order to get in, a radio report said.
Because of the incident, more policemen from the National Capital Regional Police Office (NCRPO) will be deployed to the church to maintain order there as thousands of people continue to go to Sto. Domingo to visit Poe's wake.
Police tried to stop grieving fans of Poe who came from Laguna and Bulacan from scaling and opening the main gate along Quezon Boulevard and a side gate along Domingo Avenue.
Physicians who compose the Doctors for FPJ are now treating those injured.
Meanwhile, Cecile Guidote-Alvarez, executive director of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), said flags in government offices will be flown at half-staff on December 22, when Poe is buried at the Manila North Cementery (formerly the La Loma Cemetery).
This, after President Arroyo and the Cabinet agreed Wednesday to award Poe a Presidential Medal of Merit in recognition of his immense contributions to the entertainment industry in the country.
Poe has also been nominated as National Artist for cinema.
National Artist nominations were also presented for the late Zenaida Amador for theater and the late George Canseco for music. (Sunnex Luzon) |
