Two earthquakes rock RP, no damage reported

MANILA -- Two moderate earthquakes rocked the Philippines early Monday, but no damage or injuries were reported, seismologists said.

The two earthquakes were not powerful enough to cause tsunamis and were not linked to Sunday's undersea Asian earthquake of epic power that sent huge deadly walls of water crashing down on beaches in eight countries, killing more than 20,000 people.

The first temblor struck at 4:08 a.m. (2008 GMT Sunday) and was centered near northern Olongapo City, about 113 kilometers (70 miles) southwest of Manila.

The quake, caused by the movement of the Manila Trench, had a preliminary magnitude of 4.7, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology research specialist Ric Mangao said.

The second earthquake, with a 5.0 magnitude, rocked southern Davao Oriental province some 42 minutes later.

The temblor struck at sea about 114 kilometers (71 miles) southeast of Mati town, or about 1,114 kilometers (692 miles) southeast of Manila.

The second quake, also caused by movement of the Philippine Trench, had a depth of 100 kilometers (62 miles), Mangao said. (AP)
