City crime rate dipped in '04, police say
CEBU CITY -- Three robberies and five thefts were committed each day, on the average, in Cebu City last year, but fewer crimes were reported overall in 2004 than in the year before, police said.
Theft and robbery incidents made up the most number of crimes in Cebu City for 2004.
The year saw a total of 1,150 robberies and 1,896 thefts, according to the crime statistics report of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO).
There were more theft incidents in 2003, with 2,082, but fewer robberies, with 1,135 incidents.
The statistical report merely sums up the figures recorded in police blotters all over the city. It falls silent on the effects, if any, of recent attacks that have killed 14 suspected criminals since Dec. 22.
If there's anything the police should be happy about, it's that 2004's crime volume was considerably lower than in 2003. The crime volume in 2004 was 5,852, compared to 6,409 in 2003.
Crime solution efficiency was also higher in 2004, with 62.31 percent, compared to 2003's 51.55 percent.
In 2004, January had the highest average monthly crime rate of 74.22, 577 crimes recorded and 63.26 percent solution efficiency.
May had the lowest average monthly crime rate of 51.97 with 404 crimes. It had 65.1 percent crime solution efficiency.
December came in second lowest to May, with an average monthly crime rate of 52.48 and 408 crimes reported. Solution efficiency was placed at 62.25 percent. But these figures are still lower compared to those in 2003.
In January 2003, the average monthly crime rate was 87.09 with a crime volume of 641 and 65.83 percent solution efficiency.
May 2003 had an average monthly crime rate of 59.29 and a crime volume of 437. Solution efficiency was higher, though, at 75.29 percent.
December 2003 had a crime volume of 431 and an average monthly crime rate of 55.44. Solution efficiency was at 62.41 percent.
Of the 5,852 crimes in 2004, 3,903 were solved.
After robbery and theft, physical injuries also rated the highest, with 559 recorded incidents.
In 2003, there were about 547 cases of physical injuries.
There were 85 murder cases, 26 homicide incidents, 11 rape cases and 2 parricide cases in 2004.
But in 2003, police received complaints for 59 murders, 43 homicide cases, three parricide incidents, 547 physical injuries and 28 rape cases.
Police also handled 729 drug cases, 160 cases against illegal firearms and 96 illegal gambling cases.
The campaign against non-index crimes was higher, though, in 2003.
They scored 947 in the campaign against illegal drugs, 181 in illegal firearms and 156 in illegal gambling. (MEA)
