MMDA starts implementing 'wet rag' v. jaywalkers (11:30 a.m.)

MANILA -- Despite strong opposition by Metro Manila mayors and criticism by the human rights advocates, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) started implementing Monday its "wet rag" scheme as a lesson to jaywalkers.

Under the scheme, wet blankets with the words "Maglakad at Mag-abang sa Bangketa" (Use and wait for vehicles along the sidewalks) are plopped on the heads of those caught jaywalking.

MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando said in an ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) interview that the initial implementation of the scheme as a success, adding that it has helped make pedestrians become more aware of traffic regulations.

Twenty MMDA trucks with traffic personnel on them patrolled major thoroughfares in the metropolis and kept the rags wet. (Sunnex Luzon)
