Police recruitment scam bared (6:10 p.m.)

MANILA -- Civilians wanting to get into the police force pay at least P100,000 or more for the approval of their applications by the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Senator Manuel Villar bared the scam as he vowed to investigate the alleged irregularity.

Villar said the scheme has become rampant in the country, particularly in Mindanao where there are a number of students willing to enter the police force.

"We will investigate this allegation that recruitment fees are being collected. If this is true, then it's no wonder that there is corruption in our police force," Villar said.

The investigation will determine if there are high-ranking officials in the PNP involved in collecting the exorbitant recruitment fees.

Intelligence reports reaching Villar's office said P100,000 will facilitate the "easy approval" of the applications, which includes the examination, physical checkup and other clearances.

Villar said he will summon PNP Chief Edgardo Aglipay and other officials of the police force to shed light on the matter.

He said the committee will review the guidelines in the recruitment of policemen. (JPM)
