Ex-Tagum vice mayor shot; cops probe 3 angles By Rex C. Otero and Jess Gohetia
DAVAO CITY -- A former vice mayor of Tagum City in Compostela Valley is in critical condition after he was shot Wednesday night by a still unidentified gunman near a hospital there where he works as a consultant.
Police identified the victim as Dr. Alejandro Rodriguez, 46, of Sison Subdivision in Tagum City.
Rodriguez, formerly the vice mayor of Mabini town, is a consultant/surgeon at Tagum Doctors' Hospital.
Tagum police said the incident happened at around 8 p.m. Wednesday shortly after the victim went out of the hospital.
Police said Rodriguez was about to board his car, a Toyota Rav4, parked in front of the hospital located along the national highway, when the suspect appeared from behind and without provocation shot him thrice using a caliber .45 pistol.
Police believed the suspect had been waiting for his target outside the hospital.
The victim was hit in his face and shoulder, with one of the bullets exited through his lungs.
Police said the victim is now fighting for his life at Tagum Doctors' Hospital.
After the incident, the suspect immediately boarded a lady-type motorcycle, driven by his companion who also served as lookout, and sped towards an unknown direction.
Recovered from the crime scene were two empty shells of caliber 45 pistol.
Police are conducting further investigations to identify the gunman and his companions and determine the motive of the incident.
But police investigators are looking into possibilities the incident has something to do with politics or his job as a medical practitioner. "Love triangle" is also one of the angles being looked into.
