Government radio station employee killed By Ernie N. Olson Jr.
BAGUIO CITY -- An employee of the government-owned radio station dzEQ was found dead with a gunshot wound on the head near the Botanical Garden along Leonard Wood Road late Wednesday night.
Police investigators said they have still to determine who killed the victim, the motive behind his gruesome slay and the circumstances leading to his death.
The victim was the second person working for a media firm killed in the Cordilleras in the past months.
Senior Superintendent Isagani Nerez, Baguio City Police Office director, identified the slain victim Thursday as Rogelio Villafuerte, 37, married, a radio technician, who resided at Guising Norte, Naguilian, La Union.
Sources said Villafuerte just left his house at 9 p.m. last January 26 and was reportedly on his way to work when his body was discovered a little over two hours later.
It still has to be determined whether Villafuerte's death was job-related or not.
An initial investigation disclosed that a concerned citizen named Crizanto Boado Caluza noticed Villafuerte sprawled on the road near a white Kia car bearing license plate number WDM-261 just a few meters from the Botanical Garden at around 11:10 p.m. Wednesday and immediately reported his discovery to the BCPO Station 3.
Responding policemen immediately proceeded to the area and rushed him to the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center emergency ward, but he was pronounced dead by physician Dr. Armain Posadas when he was brought there.
"It was noted that the victim sustained a lone gunshot wound on his head which entered at the back of his right ear, but the slug remained imbedded in his head, as no exit wound was found during a physical assessment that was conducted then," reported Senior Inspector Amadeo Garcia, BCPO Station 3 chief.
The probability that Villafuerte was a victim of an armed heist was ruled out after his Nokia 3210 cellphone and a wallet containing P1,700 and US$6 was found to be still in his possession.
A scene-of-the-crime operations or Soco team from the PNP Crime Laboratory regional office was also dispatched to the area to comb the area for clues that may possibly lead to the identification of his killer.
However, no progress report has yet been issued by either of the two police units as a follow-up investigation was still being conducted as of press time Thursday night.
Garcia said a follow-up investigation is being made by SPO1 Renato Wangit.
