Laoag City vice mayor shot dead

MANILA -- The vice mayor of Laoag City was shot dead Wednesday dawn by still unidentified assailants outside a videoke bar in a barangay in the city.

Malacañang promptly ordered an investigation into the killing.

Laoag City Vice Mayor Jimmy Chua, the victim, was shot and hit in the right temple outside a bar in Barangay Dalet.

A report by Laoag City Police Chief Joel Pagdilao to the national police headquarters in Camp Crame in Quezon City said the killing occurred at 2:45 a.m. outside Eagle's Nest Restaurant and Bar.

Prior to the shooting, Chua had a drinking spree with Councilor Melvin dela Cuesta.

Before going home, dela Cuesta excused himself to go to the comfort room. The vice mayor left the videoke bar ahead and went to his owner-type jeep.

At that juncture, a gunshot was heard.

Dela Cuesta said he immediately rushed outside and saw the victim dead. He saw two men wearing jackets on board a motorcycle sped toward General Segundo Avenue.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, hearing of the incident, ordered the police to immediately investigate the killing of Vice Mayor Chua.

"Itong pagpaslang kay Vice Mayor Chua ay ating mariing kinokondena at inaatasan ng Pangulo ang mga kinauukulang authorities, especially the PNP, to get into the bottom of this killing and see to it that the perpetrators are brought to justice (We condemn the killing of Vice Mayor Chua and the President has directed the authorities, especially the PNP, to get into the bottom of this killing and see to it that the perpetrators are brought to justice)," said President Arroyo's spokesman Ignacio Bunye.
