7 killed, 5 wounded in Diwalwal battle By Ben O. Tesiorna
DAVAO CITY -- Five rebels and two soldiers died while five others were wounded when the New People's Army and government soldiers clashed near the gold rush site of Diwalwal in Monkayo, Compostela Valley Saturday.
Major General Samuel Bagasin, commander of the Army's 4th Infantry Division, said the encounter took place at Sitio Puting Bato, Barangay Ngan in Diwalwal around 9 a.m. of February 5.
The Army unit under the 36th Infantry Battalion encountered the communist rebels, who are part of the Front Committee 20 headed by Kumander Lalay.
The rebels numbered around 100 when they clashed with two military platoons led by 2nd Lieutenant Edmund Lanzar.
The wounded soldiers were identified as Sergeant Rudy Abelo, Private First Class Bobby Ytang, Private First Class Ricardo Gamayot, Private First Class Jerry Patacsil and Private First Class Richard Ebcas.
Bagasin said the wounded soldiers were already evacuated from the encounter site and have been declared out of danger.
He said air support was unable to penetrate the area last Saturday due to heavy clouds. Ground pursuit operation is still ongoing as of Sunday. (With reports from Peng Aliño)
