Cops to undergo annual physical, neuro tests
MANILA -- Members of the police force will soon be required to undergo annual physical examination and neuropsychiatric test on their birth dates.
Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Edgar Aglipay said this will provide a continuing benchmark and calibration mechanism on their fitness and capability to perform duties.
"This is part of the measures that we will undertake to prevent anything similar to the Kalibo incident as well as to ensure the physical and mental capability of all PNP personnel under all types of conditions," he said.
The move is among several recommendations submitted by the fact-finding committee on the Kalibo incident chaired by PNP Chief of Directorial Staff Arturo Lomibao.
In his report to the PNP chief, Lomibao said the annual physical exam and the neuro-psychiatric test aim to gauge the mental and emotional well being of personnel, particularly those who perform police duties under very stressful conditions.
He said police identified with severe stress and manifesting stress signs and symptoms will be referred for neuropsychiatric evaluation even before he or she is scheduled to take it.
Likewise, Lomibao revealed plans to incorporate stress management in programs of instruction in all mandatory training courses at all levels.
The committee chaired by Lomibao is also supervising the conduct of nationwide drug testing for all PNP personnel.
As of Friday, a total of 18,717 uniformed and non-uniformed personnel had undergone the mandatory drug testing. A total of 4,749 personnel based at the PNP National Headquarters in Camp Crame had been tested.
In the Police Regional Offices, 6,300 policemen have been tested. (JFF)
