Militants stage Valentine's Day protest (8:05 p.m.)

DAVAO CITY -- Several militant groups celebrated the day of hearts Monday with their usual march protests on the streets.

Subject of their protest was the expanded value added tax among others.

AnakBayan held their protest Monday morning at the Jones Circle where they demanded a VAT-free Valentine. They also asked the government for a bigger budget for education instead of VAT.

Several women's group meanwhile declared the proposed hike in VAT as a "hateful deadly threat to the life and dignity of the poor especially women and children".

They claimed that another VAT hike will further reduce the purchasing power of the poor and will likely trigger more violence against mothers and children when husbands who have less or no income at all tend to vent their frustration at home. (Sun.Star Davao/BOT with PR)
