Priest to Arroyo: Give in to Iraqi rebels' demands

MANILA -- President Arroyo should give in to the demands of Iraqi militants to finally save Filipino hostage Robert Tarongoy.

Fr. Robert Reyes said this Sunday after the kidnappers of Tarongoy demanded the withdrawal of the country's support to the United States-led war in Iraq.

"Giving in to the Iraqi militants does not mean that we have just surrendered to a handful of militants. It's more than just giving in. The President has to sit down and really do an in-depth soul searching to understand the consequences of war not only for Filipinos but for the Iraqis," he said.

Reyes said the lives of the nearly eight million Filipinos working abroad will continue to be at risk if the government will not be able to create and generate jobs that would prevent them from leaving the country.

"This (job creation) is a big challenge for all of us particularly for the government and the private sector," he said as he officiated the mass at the Chino Roces bridge in Mendiola yesterday morning for the safe release of Tarongoy.

"Our OFWs (overseas Filipino workers), when they go abroad are really sacrificing a lot because of their love for their family and relatives. But this is a needless threat and risk they have to take unless the country's economic situation will improve," he said.

Aside from the families and friends of Tarongoy, former hostage Angelito Nayan and members of his family were also present during the mass. (Marie Neri)
