A cane and shoeless foot for Cebu City mayor

CEBU CITY -- Defying his doctor's orders, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña reported to work at City Hall Tuesday, using a cane to keep his balance and going without his left shoe.

Osmeña, 55, said his doctors told him to put off work for another week or until the pain subsides, but he decided to go back to City Hall three days after his operation.

The mayor's big toe on the left foot went under the knife last Saturday for a growth caused by excessive uric acid.

He also did some walking at the Cebu City Sports Center oval Tuesday dawn to exercise his foot.

"The growth from uric acid has made my shoes tighter and tighter and the damage to the flesh is severe because of particles sticking to the muscles and ligaments. But if you ask about the seriousness or danger, there is none," he told a news conference Tuesday.

The mayor said the 35-minute surgery did not require confinement but because of too much pain he felt after the anesthesia wore off, he decided to stay overnight at the Chong Hua Hospital.

One week

Osmeña decided to work since staying in bed to rest only makes him weaker, he said.

"I'm not supposed to be working for a week. Yesterday was only the third day and when I got up, I felt good and I already wanted to walk," he added.

Instead of his leather shoes, the mayor wore a running shoe on his right foot and only a white sock on his left foot because of the thick bandages. A cane also aided him in walking.

In March 2002, Osmeña was also hospitalized after he collapsed inside the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral while attending a wedding due to the sudden rise of his blood pressure.

On doctor's orders, the mayor filed a leave for six months to recuperate after he left the hospital. (LCR)

mcalvo - My graduation was unforgettable to me and to my classmates. I was so drunk the night before graduation. During the ceremony i dozed to the point of snooring even when i was already standing i was half sleeping. Our dean has to call my name twice and the person behind me has to push me just to wake me up... graduations are memorable...enjoy and congratulations to all graduates!
