MANILA -- The government is verifying if there were Filipinos who died in the strong earthquake that struck western Indonesia Monday night.

Press secretary and presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye said in a television interview that the foreign affairs department is checking the list of casualties for any Filipinos.

The 8.7 Magnitude temblor struck close to the epicenter of the area where a very strong earthquake also occurred and spawned a series of tsunamis that raced through the Indian Ocean and devastated coastal areas in more than 10 Asian and eastern African countries.

Between 1,000 to 2,000 people are feared dead in Monday's earthquake. (Sunnex Luzon)
