1T residents flee homes due to bomb scare By Claudine C. Dumalag
BACOLOD CITY -- Close to a thousand residents in three villages near an alcohol plant in Pulupandan town left their houses late Sunday night after they were told there was a bomb in the firm's premises.
Residents living in Barangays Canhusa, Zone 6 and Zone 5 fled their homes, fearing the explosion would reach them.
They did not return until 2 a.m. Monday and after police scoured the premises of the Asian Alcohol Corporation facility and confirmed there was no explosive in the place.
Senior Inspector Nestor Tuadles, town police chief, said an employee of the company received a text message about the presence of four unidentified persons on board a motorcycle. The group was reportedly planning to plant a bomb within or near the vicinity of the alcohol plant.
Tuadles said a check by his personnel yielded nothing, prompting them to believe it was just a hoax.
A police patrol unit also did not see any suspicious looking individuals roaming the area.
Tuadles refused to say when asked if he believed a rebel group was behind the bomb scare.
He said investigators are looking into the possible involvement of some retrenched ACC employees who earlier reportedly aired their gripes against the management.
To preempt any bomb explosion, Tuadles said a police unit was deployed to secure the premises of the plant.
Senior Superintendent Charles Calima Jr., Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office director, alerted all city and town police chiefs and unit commanders to heighten their intelligence monitoring efforts against bombing plots or other forms of terror acts.
