American sex offender who fled to RP deported to US (12:38 p.m.)
MANILA -- An American sex offender who escaped to the Philippines to avoid sentencing was arrested and deported back to the United States, the Philippine immigration bureau said Tuesday.
Bryan Mitchell Jones, 49, has been on a US Federal Bureau of Investigation wanted list since July 1994, when he was convicted of sexually abusing his two daughters, both under the age of 12, in Eugene, Oregon.
He failed to appear in court for his sentencing and entered the Philippines in 2001 on a passport belonging to his deceased American friend, the immigration bureau said, quoting information provided by the US Embassy, which sought his arrest.
Immigration Commissioner Alipio Fernandez Jr. said in a statement Jones was deported on a Continental Airlines flight to Guam en route to the US mainland.
The embassy did not provide his hometown. (AP) |
