Sun.Star Davao bags 4 major press awards
CEBU CITY -- Sun.Star Davao and its Sunday paper, Sun.Star Davao Weekend, won four major awards in the Philippine Press Institute (PPI)-Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Annual Community Press Awards.
In the daily category, Sun.Star Davao was adjudged Best Edited Paper, Best in Business & Economic Reporting, and Best in Photojournalism.
In the weekly category, Sun.Star Davao Weekend (Sun.Star Davao's Sunday edition) was picked Best in Photojournalism.
Both Sun.Star Davao and Sun.Star Davao Weekend are members of the country's only network of community papers, the Sun.Star Publications Network (SSPN), to which Sun.Star Cebu also belongs.
Editor
Editor-in-chief of the two Davao award-winning papers is Stella Estremera while publisher is Antonio Ajero. Lone contender from Cebu was the Cebu Daily News.
Sun.Star Cebu and The Freeman have been ineligible for the awards since 1999. The two Cebu papers were installed in the Hall of Fame in 2000. Sun.Star Cebu won eight major PPI awards, including Best Edited Daily for three consecutive years (1996, 1997, and 1998), a record still not duplicated in PPI history.
This year, Cebu Daily News lost to Sun.Star Davao, for Best Edited Paper; to Mindanao Times, for Best Editorial Page; and to Sun.Star Davao, for Best Photojournalism.
Sun.Star Davao Weekend beat Baguio Midland Courier and the Visayas Examiner (Iloilo) for Best Photo-journalim (weekly category).
Best Edited Weekly this year is Baguio Midland Courier, over Visayas Examiner (Iloilo) and Sun.Star Davao Weekend.
Prizes
Sun.Star Davao won Best Editorial Page in 2003 while Sun.Star Davao Weekend was adjudged Best Edited Weekly in 2001 and Best in Economic & Business Reporting (weekly category) in 2003.
The annual PPI-KAF awards aim to encourage excellence of community newspapers in editing, environmental reporting, business and economic reporting, and photojournalism.
Each award carried a P15,000 cash prize and a trophy. This year's PPI annual conference and awards ceremony were held at Diamond Hotel in Manila.
