Newly approved fare hike announced (5:45 p.m.)

LAND Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chairperson Maria Elena Bautista announced Monday the newly approved fare rate increase for all passenger vehicles in the country.

Public utility jeepneys (PUJs) from Regions 3 and 4 inbound to Metro Manila are covered by the latest fare hike. Passenger vehicles from Regions 1, 3, 4, 5 and Cordillera will have a P2-fare increase.

Regions 2, 9, 10, 11, 12 and the Caraga Region will have a P1-fare increase. PUJs in Regions 6, 7 and 8 will have an additional P1 to the current fare.

Ordinary buses will have a P2-fare increase. An additional fifty centavos will be added for succeeding kilometers, after the minimum kilometer.

The 20 percent student discount will continue but will not be given on legal holidays and during summer. Public utility buses and jeepneys will not grant discounts during weekends and on days without classes.

Air-conditioned buses and FX vehicles have not yet been given their respective fare increases by the LTFRB therefore no action could be taken yet, Bautista added.

Bautista also clarified the effectivity of the new tariff would be on May 26.

PUJs demanded a P2.50-minimum fare hike on April 1 while a P3.00-increase was demanded by public utility vehicles on April 25. (Sunnex)
