Police chief warns cops coddling jueteng men
By Dante M. Fabian

CLARK ECOZONE -- Police Regional Office (PRO) 3 Director Alejandro C. Lapinid warned Sunday that charges await police chiefs who fail to stop jueteng in their areas within Central Luzon.

Chief Superintendent Lapinid said his office is waging a serious and sustained drive to totally eliminate operations of the illegal numbers game "jueteng" in the region.

Angeles City Mayor Carmelo Lazatin, as he welcomed the appointment of Lapinid to the top police post in Central Luzon, called for the ridding of bad eggs from the force.

Lazatin said an effective campaign against criminality would be realized if the police force is totally cleared of misfits.

He also said police chiefs who lie and say they have no knowledge of jueteng operations going on in their areas will be dealt with using the full force of the law.

"We will charge them (police officials who are remiss in their duty to stop jueteng)," he said.

In a press conference held at the residence of retired Police Senior Superintendent Efren Alamares, Lapinid rejected reports that jueteng thrives in the second district of the province.

The newly installed PRO 3 director said the illegal numbers game has been completely stopped in all provinces including Aurora and relentless police operations have appropriately addressed reports that jueteng operations still remain in the province.

He said intelligence officers are closely monitoring and are under instructions to prevent the resurgence of jueteng in Pampanga, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Bataan, Zambales and Aurora provinces.

Deputy Director Oscar Calderon, PNP directorial staff chief, appealed to mediamen to inform the police of any jueteng-related activities in their beats.

Calderon also asked mediamen to be fair and report the stoppage of jueteng in areas where this used to flourish.

He said he would implement the police force's four-point program, which includes the enhancement of community cooperation in preventing crimes.

He underscored the importance of closer cooperation of beat patrols with people on the streets so crimes would be solved and perpetrators identified.

Lapinid has ordered provincial and city directors to revitalize and improve beat patrols by applying strategic deployment based on the crime clock in their respective areas.

He has also issued instructions to mobilize force multipliers, such as barangay police, volunteer groups and private security guards, in the fight against crime.
