CEBU CITY -- Sun.Star has been voted Newspaper of the Year in the Rotary Club of Manila National Journalism Awards.
Gina G. Atienza, Sun.Star Cebu executive publisher, received the award Thursday at the club's special meeting at Shangri-La Makati.
This is the third award for Sun.Star from the Rotary Club of Manila. Sun.Star Cebu was adjudged Regional Newspaper of the Year in 1990 and 2003, awarded in 1991 and 2004 respectively.
Juan L. Mercado of Philippine Daily Inquirer, who also writes for Sun.Star Cebu, shared the award of Opinion Writer of the Year with Jarius Bondoc of Philippine Star. Another Cebu publication, the Cebu Daily News, was voted Regional Newspaper of the Year.
This year, Sun.Star gets the Newspaper of the Year award.
Pachico A. Seares, Sun.Star Cebu editor-in-chief, said this is a first for a tabloid size publication format and a first for a non-Manila based news organization to win the title. Seares also attended the ceremony with Sunman general manager Ed Reyes.

Sun.Star's network of community newspapers, the first and only one in the country, was the brainchild of Sun.Star president Jesus B. Garcia, Jr.
