Catholic Church in RP to continue Sin's works: bishop (10:48 a.m.)
MANILA -- Balanga Bishop Socrates Villegas Tuesday vowed that the Catholic Church in the country will pursue former Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin's goal of serving the poor and his call for moral governance in the country.
Socrates, who had been Sin's aide for several years, made the promise in his homily during a funeral mass for the late cardinal at the Manila Cathedral attended by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Vice President Noli de Castro.
Thousands of people outside the cathedral had to content themselves with hearing the ceremony from loudspeakers outside the church. Even the weather cooperated as the sun shone after two days of rains.
Villegas described Sin as his "father and mentor" as he recalled the times he shared with the former Manila archbishop up until Sin's death. Villegas's voice broke off when he remembered Sin's dying moments.
He said Sin would often say "Vamos" (Let us go) whenever he needed to do something and it is that call that Sin wants the Filipino faithful to serve one another.
"He extended the invitation of Jesus to all of us to serve," said Villegas.
Villegas told Sin to "go where God wills you to be and take your deserved rest" as he asked the late cardinal to pray for all Filipinos and for the country.
"Look upon us and ask the Lord to show us what to do," Villegas added. (Sunnex)
