Dengue outbreak: Cases soar to 801

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Dengue hemorrhagic fever cases in Zamboanga City have soared to a high 801 as of July 7, though the number of patients admitted in hospitals reduced the past few days, City Health officer Rodel Agbulos said.

The dengue situation has reached the outbreak situation as of last month, and the City Government, in coordination with all agencies, has undertaken measures to eliminate dengue, acquired from bites of an infected mosquito.

Mayor Celso Lobregat has declared July 15 as a citywide clean-up day in an effort to ensure the maintenance of cleanliness and sanitation with the end view of eradicating the dengue carrier mosquitoes.

Agbulos said though fogging operations are being conducted in the city, the ultimate measure to eradicate the disease is through the cleanliness campaign.

"Fogging operations is not the ultimate procedure, but only a supplemental measure. Destroying the larva or breeding places of 'aedes' mosquitoes (dengue carrier mosquitoes) is the ultimate measure."

The City Government at present has at least 10 fogging machines to use for fumigation activities in the city.

The city health officer intends to distribute the fogging machines to the eight health districts in the city and barangays.

Cleanliness campaigns should be the concern of the community and not only of the City Government or the Department of Health, Agbulos added.

A combined group of personnel from the DOH, CHO, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the barangay councils conducted a house-to-house campaign the other day and discovered breeding sites of the dengue carrier mosquitoes.

In Canelar, out of the 16 water samples taken from different stagnant and clear water in different houses, 14 were discovered to be positive of the aedes mosquito. In Baliwasan, 29 samples of water were taken and 14 of which were positive for the carrier mosquitoes. (Sun.Star Zamboanga/Sunnex)
