Catholic bishops' position on Arroyo crisis to be known today (3:10 p.m.)
MANILA -- The influential Catholic bishops group will reveal this afternoon its stand to the country's political crisis hounding President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Monsignor Hernando Coronel, a spokesman for the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), said they are voting as of press time whether they would ask the President to resign or stay provided she would come out with an effective solution that would stop the crisis and restore the nation's stability.
Some 80 Catholic bishops are participating in the voting.
The position of the CBCP to the issue is expected to influence the stand of the Filipino people as to how they will face the crisis.
The church plays a key role in the success of ousting from power two leaders in the country, former presidents Ferdinand Marcos and Joseph Estrada, in 1986 and 2001.
Various sectors asked the President to relinquish her post for allegedly cheating in last year's elections because it is the only solution available under the Constitution to stop the crisis. Several known individuals, including former president Corazon Aquino who helped Arroyo attain the presidency through people's revolt in 2001, called for the President to voluntarily resign to save the country from imminent subversion.
